The Making of
Talkin’ Social Media Blues

The first time anyone saw TALKIN’ SOCIAL MEDIA BLUES was when I screened it for a small group of Twitter peeps as an impromptu party to celebrate my 100th day in a row of Daily V-Loggin’:

But an bringing an idea like this from inception to materialization is no party. I got the idea for the song, wrote it straight away, and recorded it the next morning. Here is the Daily Video Blog entry from when I was working on the beat in which I explain how I came up with the idea:

Two days later, I shared footage of the recording of the song as well as brought you with me for the car ride the very first time anyone heard the song:

I got into some deep thinking about consumer culture the day that I went to make the signs for this video:

I shot the video on my own in an afternoon in five locations around town that I had scoped out. I was very clear with myself that I was trying to do something reminiscent of DONT LOOK BACK…

And then the day that I was editing the video, I got really heavy about being an artist:

This video was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. If you are a Social Media enthusiast, I hope you think it’s funny.

Sometimes you just want to laugh and forget your cares.  Sometimes you just want to have a laugh so hard that it turns into one of those awkward noises that kills the vibe around you until the next thing that’s funny.  Then you cry a little bit.  You might even settle for a chuckle.  Or even one of those things that is not laugh out loud funny, but will make you stroke your chin and go “You know?  That’s really funny.”  Or you could do like the teens and instead of actually laughing, you make a shocked face and say “El oh El!!”

This week in The Link I present some of my favorite funny photo blogs.

THERE I FIXED IT - I was turned on to this one by my homey Tony from Los Angeles.  It’s a chronicle of interesting solutions to uncommon problems like when the toilet doesn’t leave enough room for the door to open or when they’ve built the car a little too small for the cargo.  My favorite is the floating power strip in the kiddie pool.

THIS IS PHOTOBOMB – Photobombing has been a favorite activity of mine since before I knew there was a name for it.  I used to… what am I talking about ‘used to’?  I still love to see people about to get their picture taken and run in and throw my arm around the person on the end with a big thumbs up.  They always, 100% of the time, tell me to stay in for the real picture.  This is Photobomb contains both advertent and inadvertent photobombs, and they will all crack you up.

FAIL BLOG – This is a staple of the web enthusiast’s diet.  Is there anyone who has been net-savvy for any length of time who is not all over this site?  Fail Blog features photos and videos of people learning things the hard way.  You will laugh and you will cringe in equal measure.

PICTURE IS UNRELATED – Another one that seems to be as popular as Fail Blog.  This one bills itself as “WTF pictures and video”.  Not much to say beyond that except for “hey man, go have a look.”

Every week (approximately), I shine the spotlight upon a site that has made me laugh, think, feel, or run.  This week, we shine the spotlight on dontevenreply.com – Emails from an Asshole.

This is prank calling for the Internet age.  The concept is simple.  The owner of the site replies to classified ads in some bizarre or annoying manner, and posts the whole exchange for all the world to enjoy.  It is bloody hilarious.

I remember I once saw a book in a bookstore called Letters From A Nut.  It was a whole book of letters some guy had written to companies, and their replies.  I really hoped I would get that book for my birthday that year but I did not.  Anyways, E-mails from an Asshole ups the ante on that concept because people placing classified ads do not have PR spokespeople and usually end up swearing at the guy when he’s writing to sell them vintage liquor that’s a month old, get them to spend their vacation in his apartment in the bad part of town, or trade a car for his wife.

This site is bloody hilarious.

I was doodling Jesus today after watching a bunch of clips from The Last Temptation of Christ.  I can’t remember where my mind had wandered to arrive at Robo-Jesus, but I do recall thinking of the Terminator drawing the piece of robot arm and thinking to put a real arm on the end of it, but then thinking about the rubber Hulk Hogan doll from the 80s when I was actually drawing that piece of arm.

And notice Robo-Jesus has a USB plug for a right hand!  That’s handy!
