This is my rendition of the 1930s Cole Porter jazz standard Anything Goes.

I suspect that many in the general audience will stop watching before they even get to where I start writing my own lyrics but if you’re on my website there ain’t exactly much that’s ‘general’ about you, is there?

This song was written and originally performed by Cole Porter, and has been covered many times since then.  Some of you even recognize it as the song sung in Chinese at the beginning of Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom.

This video exists because weeks ago on my show, the grand prize was that the winner could request any song they liked and I would perform it on the following episode.  The winner that week was a super-cool girl named Megan who requested this song.  She even trekked all the way down to the studio the following week to see me play this song live in studio but there was one problem – the keyboard wouldn’t work.  Megan wouldn’t be seeing her performance.  I looked to her and saw her heart breaking.  The best I could do was to tell her “Megan, I’ll do you one better – I owe you a video.”

Now that I had my task before me, I had to think of a concept.  I was watching Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory video and for some reason I started hearing the Anything Goes melody over top of it.  It struck me that the lyrics of Anything Goes are as relevant now as ever, and that’s when I found the hook for my version of the song.  I based my arrangement on Edge of Glory, ripping off as many elements as I needed to before taking in my own direction.  Like I told you before – I take something old and something new and I turn it into something timeless.  And now here I am telling you my formulas!  Who else gives it to you like this??
