Picking the Pen Back Up – Thinking About Comics

For the last few months, I have had a new idea for a comic book series bubbling up. I want to do something that’s fun and upbeat. I want to do something adult, but I don’t want that to mean sex, drugs, or gross-out. I want to do the most silly, surreal, and psychedelic thing there is, but with a lot of heart, and I want it to ring with a timeless quality. That’s kind of been my mission with everything I’ve been involved with creatively, even though you wouldn’t know it from the TV show I was working on for the last two years. My wings were kind of clipped on that one. I never got to do what I went there to do, and I feel like the real me hasn’t been allowed out for a long, long time.

So I get thinking about this new comic book series and I get a little bit flustered. I want to get down to business on it right now, run up to the copy place and photocopy it, and hand it out like I used to do back in the old days. But the world has changed in the last few years since I was hustling on the street for a few bucks. I know what kind of stories this new series is going to have in it, but I am fuzzy on the form that these stories are going to take.

And this is where you come in.

I want to know how you think is the best way to get these stories out to you.

What do you think is the best way to balance a web presence and a print comic book? I know that web comics can reach the biggest audience, but I also think in terms of the book. I could make the book and post a page a week as a webcomic, but then I don’t know if it will flow like it should. Your thoughts?

Am I just over-thinking this stuff? I do that.

Like I said, I am gathering information so let me know what your thoughts are on this stuff. You can leave a comment on this post, or for a more personal touch you can email me direct at

OK, back to the sketchbooks…

Yeah, I’m starting to put my stuff up using the webcomic route as well. http://revolutuck.wordpress.com/key-web-comic/
Because it will get it out there, there is no extra cost and nightmare of copy printing it out, that usually slows me to get it out in the first place. It’ll help me build up interest from an audience if one day I actually do have the opp. to actually be printed by someone respectfully. Plus, it’s better fer the environment, no?
It has helped me just get this big wait off my chest of getting these project finally finished up and done that I’ve had hidden away for WAY TOO MANY YEARS! And the tact I’m taking with it this time is, to not “think about it”, just do it.. it doesn’t have to look perfect, just get it out. That is the tactic I’m using at this time.

Yes, a Sean Ward web comic would be wonderful. I was actually thinking about that with ya. Heck we should start up some kind of collective like “Act-I-Vate”.

The once a week comic webpage sounds like a great idea, it’ll keep people coming back to see what happens in your story, so your website will get more hits/views, as well as promoting your new series. Then you could always have the option of selling the real thing, live and in person, from a webstore… and from there, possibilites=endless

This is a tricky question. I suppose that at the rate that the internet is going, your best bet to get it noticed is to post it up as a webcomic. The problem with this obviously comes up if you’re trying to get any monetary value out of it, etc.

However, from the perspective of someone who digs the stuff that you dish out, I like the idea of a physical comic book to have something tangible that i can look back on for years to come.

Hi Sean :) – My personal opinion is to do a web-comic- BLOG and maybe put out 3 pages a week which would in turn, make people come running back for more.. then when the comic is finished, offer them to buy it. Say “Like this comic? Why not add it to your collecting for $7.99 at http://www._______ – Limited time only” and have a webstore at that link. You could also go further into making other accessories based around that particular comic – mugs, pins etc, and offer them in our webstore. There are many places online that do marketing items for really cheap. This way, you get the exposure, as well as some sort of income from it. Let’s not fool ourselves, everyone wants and needs profit in order to live. Hope that helps!
