Happy Birthday, Twitter!

Twitter

Today is Twitter’s 4th birthday!  The very first tweet was sent on March 21, 2006.

Just four short years, and look at how much the very nature of how we communicate has changed forever.

It’s funny that for all of the people on Twitter, how central it is to how I live my life, and how it’s almost like this little country away from everything else, there are still many people who don’t get what it’s about.

I describe Twitter as a party happening in a really big house. There are tons of people there; some of them you know, some of them you don’t. Conversations are happening everywhere. You overhear things that you perk up at and you join the conversation. The rest is chatter that you pay no attention to.

If our explanation doesn’t suit you, here it is, brought perfectly down to Earth for you.

Despite Twitter’s popularity and importance, there remain some non-believers.

How do you describe Twitter to people who aren’t down with it?

    YAY first comment!! lol ;)

    anyways…

its really cool how your so dedicated to social networking!! great job on everything your doing. I kind of get too dedicated on these sites that I get distracted from my school work. and it's not a good idea to slack on that since I am inches away from the end of my school career!! LOL!!

    Right on for first comment!

I love Social Networking. Social Media, whatever you want to call it. I just love hanging out in that world, and feeling like I'm helping and making a difference thru both doing stuff like last week's Blog Stars event, and being super-active so people can feel like they can be themselves in that arena. And I'm really blessed to have this Internet thing to be able to stay in touch with friends in far away places like you!

you know what else? I just found another good reason for twitter!!! It told me right away that you replied!! loI I think its really cool that you found something your passionate about! that's what I am trying to do for after the graduation and all that. I want to work for something I am passionate about as well, and I won't settle for anything less. ;)

and even though facebook/twitter is a good way for us to still communicate since we live super far away from each other, it makes when u come back to LA even better so we can go on lil adventures getting lost around here. :) haha But don't worry we won't get lost anymore since I have a GPS now!!! (maybe…I can't guarantee I won't get lost, but it will make it easier. ;) )

    I can picture it now…

    GPS: “Turn left!”
Me: “You missed the turn! it said to go left!”
You: “No, I know a better way.”

    Three hours later…

GPS: “You are back where you started.”

    LOL I love “Super News”!
ok, yeah Twitter is an interesting animal. The society is moving from private to a more open one. More braver. In the past the privetizing was more out of fear and security. Is it generational or what, but are we becoming more braver? This has only been in a span of 10 years. We were much more paranoid in the 90's.
    Things are looking up world!

isn't that exactly what happened when Nicole and I were trying to find the place u were staying at??? (except the fact that I was talking to u on the phone instead of u being in the car yet) Seriously how many times did I pass the place!!! HAHA!! But i'm not gonna lie, there have been times when the GPS told me to go certain ways and I just completly ignored it. ;)

I am not a trained anthropologist, but I think that the whole 90s paranoia was borne of the “Me First” attitude that sort of defined what American culture is about in the 80s. It assumes that one is so important that everything stops and starts with them. But in practice, most people are not that intersting to 'big brother' and the ones that are buying into 'the con' are doing so whether Big Brother is watching or not.

I love the convergence. I want there to be a public repository of everything there is to know about everything. “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's” and all of that.

    That's no surprise!

Whoah, I gotta start doing more writing, dead tired at 2:30am. That was pretty good what I wrote above…

    Yeah, you're on fire!
