The #blogstars Wrap-Up

Toronto Blog Stars Sean Ward

The Guide to Social Media Success was earlier this evening as I write this, and I am over-the-moon excited. It could not have gone any better. The very first Blog Stars event was a smashing success all the way around.  Thank you to Raymi and Casie for being on the bill with me, and to Carly-Anne at The Fairlie Agency for putting it together.  Extra special thanks to Carly for being visionary enough to gather this motley collection of personality bloggers and giving it a name!

Toronto Blog Stars:
Sean Ward ☆ Raymi the Minx ☆ Casie Stewart ☆ The Fairlie Agency

I am so so so touched that so many people came and got so much out of our event. Thank you all so much for your tweets during my presentation! Carly was at the back watching the #blogstars hashtag throughout the night, but Raymi and Casie and I didn’t get to see those tweets until we went to eat after. I was stunned silent by the outpouring of support and appreciation. Silent! Me! Mr. Always-On!

Man, what a night. I’m just starting to take a closer look at the tweets from during the event right now.

All of the photos in this post were tweeted with the hashtag #blogstars during the event!

Casie was up first…

Casie just might be the greatest Internet visionary out of the group.  It’s just so in her blood.  Instead of a hand-out, she had a password-protected post on her blog so that attendees could follow along, click links, and see what she’s talking about on their own screen.

“You can’t be an eagle if you’re hanging with the seagulls.”

-Casie’s Mom

Raymi: “Be interesting.  And if you have an interesting life, blog about it.”

Blogging loops in on itself – Raymi gets photographed and blogged talking about getting photographed and blogged.  (photo tweeted by @luckymakeup)

Note the bottle on the table…

From @Mikeship1: Can’t remember the last event I went to where the presenter was drinking a molson while presenting.

A lot of talk about Haters in the presentations tonight.  Seriously, it is one of the drawbacks of the job when you put yourself out there in the fashion that we do.

@Mikeship1: Haters are the most loyal ppl ever, they complain you’re boring and come back 2mrw to make sure you’re still boring.

I went last.

@STEPHCABICOI’m trying to figure out where Toronto blogger @seanward’s accent is from.

I get it all the time.  People guess that I have an accent from the Canadian East coast, England, South Africa, New York, the American South, and all over the place.  But I was born and raised in good ol’ Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

@MikeShip1: Loving @seanward s slides. And yes, I am a winner

@UrbanNativeGirl: @seanward is bringing out the stats – he knows the way to my quantifying heart

Awwwwww…

“You don’t have to be good.  You just have to be interesting.”

-Sean Ward

@JaneKatherine: love feeling inspired by amazing, positive people

“There’s good attention and bad attention, but Google doesn’t know the difference.”

@CasieStewart, tweeting from the front row: You are a really good speaker @seanward

@UrbanNativeGirl, tweeting the kind of comment that makes all of this worth doing: I really am getting pumped at #blogstars – can’t wait to kick up my own blog a few notches – new camera, new layout, and new time to blog!

@Lisa_TTRO: @seanward thanks for all the great advice tonight at #blogstars cool that you mentioned @nubbytwiglet her site inspired me to start blogging

  • I gotta check in. I qualify, by Raymi's goofy and self-serving definition as a "hater". Hater is as lazy a label as any other label. I've gone to her blog, regularly, for the same dumb reasons I watch The Housewives of Dade County or whatever the fuck they are called. Because it's compelling to watch people make assholes of themselves. That's the basic impetus for watching reality television and following so-called edgy or trendy blogs.

If writing of the quality that Raymi produces is considered, by your or any other cohort, as evidence of talent or gift, then god help the future of literacy. If aliens land and autopsy the mummified remains of today's twenty-something tribe they will be amazed at the development of the tendons and muscles that support your thumbs, not your ability to write, for Christ's sake. You must be the least literate generation since...what...cave people?
  • So... did you have a question?
  • I love this blog post. I think I would of learned a lot if I went. To bad I didn't -insert sad face-. Just off the blog post, I have many quotes I'd like to share:

"@Mikeship1: Haters are the most loyal ppl ever, they complain you’re boring and come back 2mrw to make sure you’re still boring."

“You don’t have to be good. You just have to be interesting.”
    -Sean Ward

“There’s good attention and bad attention, but Google doesn’t know the difference.”
    -Sean Ward

These type of people show what media is about. It's, in my opinion, what you make of it. Like life.
  • That was one of my points in my talk: Social Media is just a buzz word and you do well at it the same way you do well at anything.
  • crystalgibson
I am so bummed that I missed your event.
You, Casie, Raymi and Carly are superstars and I've learned sooo much from hanging with you.
Next time you guys do a presentation - I promise to be in attendance but know that I support all of you and think you are badass.
    Love, C xo
  • Well it's coming and if things do the way they could, you might be involved more than you know!
  • Sean, thanks so much for this great wrap up! and thanks even more for using THREE of my tweets from last night, atleast I know I provide some value :)

Also, a really great presentation from you (and the other presenters, props to all of you) Its great to see young people doing something they love, and being successful while also being honest about who they are.

P.S. Where do you get your mad style :-P

    @mikeship1
  • Thanks very much for the props! I know that everyone was a little nervous, but also excited. But people like you in attendance smoothed it right out.

My style starts with a life-long love of hip-hop, and then trying to dress like the Beatles but tweaking it and making it my own.
  • First!
  • Last! My everything!
  • Ha ha. Ok, seriously folks, this talk was great! My girlfriend, @donnavitan, was the one who bought my ticket and dragged me out and I'm very glad she did. I really liked the format of the talks and the speakers. In all honestly, I don't read blogs, and I've never read Sean's blog, or any of the other blogs by the Blog Stars. After this talk though, I'm pumped to start creating! I also feel more intelligent about blogging after hearing the stories of the Blog Stars.

I hope you keep giving these talks Sean, and that things explode (in a good way) for you and the blog stars.

PS: I'll keep you posted about the Sanyo cams ;)
  • Sanyo cams!! Right here!!!

We will def. keep doing these talks, and a lot of even more interesting things. Stay tuned!!
