This week I would like to take you deep into the wonderful world of Improv Everywhere.
Improv Everywhere’s slogan is “We Cause Scenes”, and that’s putting it mildly. Their stunts range from something quite silly and random like having a guy pretend he can’t find his friends at the basketball game and getting the whole section to call out to him, to spontaneously performing choreographed musical numbers in grocery stores and mall food courts.
I love Improv Everywhere, and I get excited every time I see a new video from them on my Youtube subscriptions page, for a couple of reasons.
1. It’s all upbeat. All of their stunts are about bringing people together and having a shared, memorable experience. There’s nothing cynical or jaded about their art. It’s all very joyous, perpetuating the idea that life is to be celebrated.
2. They’re reminding adults how to play. It’s fun watching bystanders get caught up in the stunts because so many grown folks have lost the ability to just roll with it when something out of the ordinary goes on. Causing people to step outside of the norm and bring a little party vibe into otherwise mundane proceedings is a big public service.

UPDATE: Their next stunt is taking place all over the world! If your city has a subway, then there’s probably a No Pants Subway Ride going on in your town this coming Sunday, January 10.
