Five Bands I Want to See in Cartoons

Beatles cartoon Abbey Road rooftop concert

Music and cartoons go hand-in-hand. Spongebob sings. So did The Smurfs. The Jackson 5, The Beatles, New Kids On The Block; they all had their own animated series.  Fictional cartoon bands were once a TV staple from Josie & the Pussycats to The Impossibles to Alvin & the Chipmunks.

Now that cartoons are acceptable viewing for a much wider audience than in previous decades I am surprised at the lack of cartoon shows, whether broadcast or online, featuring real-life bands.

Here are five groups I think would make for a good cartoon show. Who would you like to see animated? Leave your ideas in the comments below!

  1. THE BEATLES – I know it’s been done, but this is a band who keeps getting reinvented, decade after decade, by every new generation of music lovers who discovers them.  Their music and image remain as relevant as ever, and I think that playing with them in a modern context would be a lot of fun.
  2. WU-TANG CLAN – Their image has become sufficiently iconic that you can put them in any situation and have it still be authentic.  Wu-Tang in Space?  Wu-Tang under the sea?  It all works.
  3. THE DONNAS – These ladies were once offered a cartoon series and turned it down for fear of the general public mistaking them for a spin-off of the series.  That was pre-Web 2.0.  Had the ladies been born six years later, and been releasing Turn 21, Spend the Night, and Get Skintight now, this would be a slam dunk as a web series.
  4. KANYE WEST – Cartoon wonder-worlds are so central to his creative vision, and he’s such a chameleon with his image, that I’m surprised this hasn’t happened already.  I picture it as a hip hop Yellow Submarine crossed with Tron and Star Wars.
  5. UBIQUITOUS SYNERGY SEEKER – Of all of the indie bands emerging out of the Canadian music scene, none have such an iconic or boundary-pushing image as this duo, and I’m not just saying that because they’re friends of mine.  Amongst our circle of peeps, we’ve been cross-pollinating each other for years and it’s been exciting to see the levels they’ve taken the vision to as darlings of the music industry.

What band or performer do you think would make for an awesome cartoon show?  Let me know in the comments below!

  • My list would have to be:

    1. Kanye West - Obvious reasons. I think if Kanye pretty much 'directed' it it would be similar to Akira... it was his inspiration for Stronger and where [it seems to me anyways] he got that bear from. Not necissarily in plot but in the same kinda cyberpunk futuristic weird way.

    2. Yelle - GOD YES she is so cute. Not even just in an appearance way but she's just too french for her own good sometimes. It would be one of those "MUSIC ALWAYS SAVES THE DAY" cartoons but there's nothing wrong with that!

    3. K-Os - I think his cartoon would be kind of asian-influenced but just awesome and hip-hoppy. Plus if it includes the actual music K-Os just kicks all kind of ass. Probably be using microphones as nunchuks and crazy shit like that. And the guy he's trying to beat would be some Miyagi-type who can spit rhymes faster than Twista on a cheetah's back.
  • K-Os would be a web show. Kanye would be on TV. This Kanye idea is picking up steam.

I'm gonna have to put Queen out there because I think you could do some hilarious stuff with the whole band. Also, The Spice Girls. Hear me out before you start knockin' them. Come on, with those 5 different looks and British accents you don't think you could play around with and make it entertaining to watch?! Number 3, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. It would be a little more mellow than some of the others but still good I think. Number 4, Madonna...nuff said. And number 5, The King himself, Elvis Presley.
  • Knock the Spice Girls? Me? Lady, I was in the theatre for Spice World the Movie on opening night, I will have you know.
  • Hmm...I would think of bands that have not been done yet, so a couple of the best would have to be put aside for now, but all that aside:
backstreet boys-they had the burger king action figures, but never went ahead with it to make a full on cartoon
    beach boys
    blink 182
spice girls-that would make a very interesting comic in my opinion
T-Pain would be very entertaining in my opinion
  • Spice Girls was so close to getting on my list. I think that even if they did it now, people would watch it. T-Pain would be another character on Kanye's Show.
  • manale
    Del Shannon
    Nirvana
    Blind Melon
    Elvis
    Phil Ochs
  • Those are fantastic pics, although I have to wonder how the Nirvana one would play...
  • Let's see.. off the top of my head.. without thinking much about it..

    White Stripes

Beatles (same as you said, in regards to what one would look like now)

    Led Zeppelin

Muck Sticky (and hey that may one day happen ;)

    Snopp Dawg (just because)

I could've easily went with Kiss or Rolling Stones.. but not sure this gen would take to it. How about a Johnny Cash toon???
  • White Stripes, that's two for the stripes!

Led Zeppelin... hmmmm.... I don't know about about them

I almost put Snoop Dogg as one of my picks, but Kanye just edged him out

Kiss, Rolling Stones, those would both work as web cartoons as a means of brand extension....
  • Amandaisprocrastinating Plain
    Oh this was fun!
-Obviously animated White Stripes would be killer, especially if endowed with some kind of superpower that originates from Meg's drum sticks and Jack's guitar pick or something.
-The Rat Pack as kids-kind of like Rugrats
-A show were Ravi Shankar lives next door to Maurice Chevalier (just think of the music mashups!)
-Not quite what you had in mind, but I think it would be funtastic if Jay Z appeared on Doug (if only), or even if Dirt Off Your Shoulder was playing while Doug was strutting down some block to meet Patty Mayonnaise. Jay could have his own show too, where he could only be seen by some geeky kid. I imagine the Hov would teach the geeky kid how to embrace his geekyness because it's the source of tremendous creativity. Or something...
  • The White Stripes nearly made my Top 5, but didn't on account of the fact they have been so resistant to that particular kind of commercialization. If they were a little more loose with their image, I'd be all over it.

The Rat Pack Kids - holy shit! I wouldn't be surprised!

Jay Z - I pictured him as a frequent guest star on Kanye's show

One of them went on to form Spiritualized, and the other releases stuff under his own name, as Sonic Boom. (The store on Bloor Street is named after him, and you can see the Spacemen 3 triangle logo on their orange bags! He's also working with MGMT on their new record.)
