Tron Legacy trailer

This is a big week for movie trailers, as the San Diego Comic-Con is an increasingly vital part of the marketing campaign for Hollywood genre movies. That’s where the big studios go to debut the trailers for their big movies coming out the next year.

This year, the Alice in Wonderland trailer was getting a lot of attention after being leaked to the internet in the week leading up to Comic-Con. But Alice in Wonderland can officially sit down now that the Tron Legacy trailer is making the rounds on the web.

This looks amazing. Tron was definitely due for an update and this was really exciting news when they announced it last year. Disney had to get creative in the late 70s and early 80s when their animated features weren’t the draw that they once were, and Tron was one of the results of that era. Now history repeats (Yes Disney owns Pixar, but it is still a separate studio) and Tron Legeacy looks like a real passion project for people in the movie business who grew up as fans of the original. And to find out that Daft Punk is doing the score? That is exciting news.

And here is the official website, staged to look like a memorial page for the main character, Kevin Flynn, who went missing (into his computer) in the original. The potential here for an online marketing campaign along the lines of The Dark Knight or The Blair Witch Project is enormous.

Do you remember the original fondly? If you’re too young for it when it was in theatres, have you seen on video? Does it hold up? Do you think Tron Legacy looks like a worthy follow-up? Share your thoughts in the comments.

If you were not paying close attention, you would quickly assume it's a clip from the original film. That's a good thing! Is it fully CGI, whats all going on here? I wonder.

*ok, well the Jeff Bridges shots look properly filmed.. so looks like blending.

I have clear memory of playing the old arcade game. The bike sequience always stood out for me!

I didn't see the original until just a year or two ago. I'm fuzzy on the details, but I remember all the game pieces. It's so the right time to revisit this. The new one is going to be so bomb.

I wonder if the Tron Website will turn into a full blown ARG or if it will just stay as a blog. Though both are quite cool.

Never saw the first, but after seeing this trailer I'll put it on my “to see” list this summer.

    What is ARG?

Alternate Reality Game – if you ever heard of the huge Halo campaign “I Love Bees” where they made people travel all over the world writing down numbers from payphones and stuff as part of their marketing campaign, that was an ARG. Basically it is an advertising (usually anyways, sometimes its just for fun) thing where they try to blend real life and the game to make you try and solve puzzles to get you interested in the product.

They're pretty cool, if there's ever one that takes place almost solely in the GTA I might try it out.

The tron one looks like it developed over the last 2 weeks though!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Wow, they must be shovelling money at this, building custom buildings n shit. They did all that in San Diego because of Comic Con, but it will be fun to see what they do in Toronto, New York, and LA as we get closer to the movie coming out.
