Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland trailer

This is supposed to be the stable, official video so let’s hope it doesn’t go anywhere! Thanks to Alys for the hook up.

MY THOUGHTS – I used to read both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass at least once a year, until my copy went missing.  I hold this material very dear.

  • Alice at a teenager – I can get with that.  That’s cool.  You have to sell the movie so making her a little older gives it sex appeal.
  • The look of it – It’s visually arresting, but I fear that that’s all there is to it.  Tim Burton hasn’t done anything that’s engaged the emotions since Edward Scissorhands (Big Fish, a personal favorite, wasn’t all the way ‘the Tim Burton style’).  The excitement that surrounds his releases is the ultimate triumph of style over substance.  Full disclosure: I have only seen the first 20 minutes of Corpse Bride, and it looks promising.
  • The Mad Hatter’s perspective – this trailer makes it look like the movie is from the Mad Hatter’s point of view.  I hope this is not the case, and that the trailer was only constructed that way for the sake of giving Johnny Depp top billing.

well, to be fair, his version is more of a melding of the two stories. alice is returned to wonderland, after her initial visit, to save the place from the red queen. that's why she's older. and, while i understand the style over substance argument, he's made too many masterpieces to be maligned: frankenweenie, beetlejuice, scissorhands, batman (i'll argue till the day i die that it's the greatest comic book movie ever made, given the time and place it was made in and it's influence on every other comic film made after), ed wood (brilliant. seen it like thirty times.), nightmare before christmas, sleepy hollow (gets better with each viewing), the list goes on. he's misfired, for sure, but give credit where it's due. who else even approaches his style? i'd rather watch his worst film than some filmmakers best films. and, c'mon, who better to bring 'alice in wonderland' to the screen? i'm excited...
  • In the immortal words of Public Enemy: Don't.... Don't, don't, don't.... Don't believe the hype!!

Big Fish, Ed Wood, I quite like those. So I like Tim Burton when he's not doing his signature Tim Burton thing. Frankenweenie, haven't seen it. Beetlejuice, funny but fluff. Pee Wee's bi Adventure is more of a classic than BeetleJuice. And Batman?? Serious? Spider-Man 2 all day.

but nothing can Fuck with Edward Scissorhands. That's Tim Burton doing Tim Burton and he will never top it.

As crazy as it may sound, you know who I think would do a terrific job of Alice in Wonderland? PT Anderson.

hype? we've both seen the proof in the poodin'. beetlejuice is no fluff. that's a solid story and fantastically delivered. besides all that, though, i feel the pt anderson love. but, i'd love to see burton's version more. maybe if he'd adapted american mcgee's 'alice in wonderland'. then, of course, there's marilynn manson's proposed directorial debut regarding lewis carroll's life...

but, give me a break, tim burton is a rock star. you'd love to be involved with the maestro...
  • Hey, I want nothing more than for this Alice in Wonderland to come out and be the best thing ever.
  • dude. saw this movie this weekend. fuggin' train wreck. he completely misses the point, and mystery, of the novels. shoehorning in some ludicrous story about alice slaying the jabberwocky with some dumb sword. worst johnny depp performance, yet. dumb made up words. and don't get me started on 'fudderwhacking'. there are some pretty images, but the illustrations in the novels are beautiful. overall, a very disappointing movie. i thought this was ideal for tim burton, but it's a mess.
  • Yeah, I thought it looked like doodie all the way along. From the get go, I was saying 'What's with this business about being a teenager and going back? Why not just do it straight?'
  • Hey Cuz! I think it looks awesome - but I am a Tim Burton and Johnny Depp groupie who loves everything they do. The only criticism I have is that it looks a little bit too animated. Also - can't believe you haven't seen the whole Corpse Bride movie. Shame! You should come over when our condo is finished and watch it.
  • That is an awesome idea! But let's make it happen before the start of September because then I'm back in California for a few months!
  • the trailer looks awesome! but then again thats what trailers are for right?? to boost up the movie. lol but i get what your saying that the trailer makes it seem like its the mad hatters point of view, but like you said i think they are just doing that to boost up johnny, but overall i think it looks good!!

what i like about tim burton doing movies like this, is that he sticks more to the books, even though i LOVE disney (obviously...lol) they are just meant for fantasy, when, i think, tim burton brings out what the books are trying to tell.

i have been waiting for this movie since last year i cant wait for it to come out! thanks for posting sean!! i might have to repost it myself as long as it doesnt go away ;)
  • now that it's officially out in the open, I think we'll be OK. Glad you liked it.... but the Tron Legacy trailer is where it's at now!!
  • i saw that looks good as well! so many good movies so little time. :)
  • Thanks for the hook up, bud!
  • OOOp! GONE ALREADY!!
Copyright violation of Walt Disney Company by that evil evil youtube!!!!!!!!!
  • You know I got your back, homey.
  • I think it looks decently good, far from a bad movie, but I think it's getting a little too much hype just cause it's by Tim Burton.
  • the Tim Burton hype every time he does a movie is the ultimate triumph of style over substance. He hasn't done anything really engaging or special since Edward Scissorhands. That was a masterpiece.

I was having a discussion on Facebook about the fact that the trailer is from the Mad Hatter's perspective. I hope that's just for the sake of marketing the movie, I don't want him to be the narrator.

"He hasn't done anything really engaging or special since Edward Scissorhands. "

I take it you haven't seen Big Fish?
  • I completely forget that was him. Big Fish is a favorite. I stand corrected!!

I think of Tim Burton, I think of Sleepy Hollow, Willy Wonka, etc.
