Michael Jackson Tribute - The Greatest of All Time

**Please share your favorite Michael Jackson memory in the comments below!**

Ours was the family in the neighborhood that kept up to date with all of the hit records so while my Father worked late most nights one summer, my mother and sister and I would slide the back door open, point the speakers out towards the playground behind our townhouse, and blast Michael Jackson out into the neighborhood.

None of the backyards were fenced in and everyone’s yard opened onto that playground.  The subdivision was packed with families who had young kids, and all of them ended up sitting on the grass, night after night, watching my mother and sister and I put on a concert using turkey baster microphones and broom guitars.  My cousin Josh was the best of all of us at The Moonwalk.

For a fan as big as me, yesterday was a very sad day that compelled me to drop everything to create this portrait as my tribute to The Greatest.

God bless you, Michael Jackson.  You gave us everything you had – body, mind, and soul.  You will live forever.

EDIT: Here is a eulogy, by Bob Lefsetz, that is far better than anything I had started to type and then deleted over and over: http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/

Excerpt:

He missed his childhood and now he’s gonna miss his old age.

How fucked up is that?

Michael Jackson never had a chance.  He had to succeed for his family, his parents’ dreams were dependent upon him.

And a boy with that much pressure delivers.  He works truly hard, so he will be loved.  That’s all Michael Jackson was looking for, love.

Did you watch the Motown 25th Anniversary special? Were you born a little later only knew him from what you saw after the fact? Share your favorite Michael Jackson memory below…

    Great MJ
  • Thank you!

I wish someone would have put that kind of pressure on me! or anything like it. I was left to fend for myself and figure out the game and not instructed to set a single goal. I coulda been a contender.
  • A great and wise woman once told me that life is fair in that we're all dealt a hand... but some of us get a Full House while others get a pair of threes.... I guess you've gotta bluff!
  • omg I love. DEFF submit to Threadless dude. 100% #MJ
  • I'm gonna do it!

Legend! The first record I put on when I moved into my new apartment here in Paris at the end of May was Thriller (but yes, Beat It was great too).

As a kid, I remember watching the Thriller video on a fuzzy little TV set at my grandparents' cottage, in broad daylight, but still pulling my feet up under me, lest a monster under the chair grab them as they dangled over the edge. Terrifying makeup! And Vincent Price!
  • Vincent Price made that song! If you don't have it, get hold of the special edition re-release of Thriller that has Mr. Price's whole unedited take of his rap, with the unheard second verse. Plus there's lots of really great stuff about the recording of the album in the interviews.

Nelson George was already writing a book about the album before this whole thing happened. I can't wait to read it.

I was really little when that video came out but I remember that in my house, we were absolutely not allowed to have the TV on during dinner. My Father was very old-fashioned about the family sitting down to dinner together undistracted and undisturbed. Except for when Thriller was coming on the countdown, then he would wheel the TV over to the table. So that old me that this song and this man were a really big deal.

Oh, I've got it! And Price did his part in two takes; a pro, the man had timing. The home demo of Billie Jean is pretty heavy too, considering where that song ended up.

I'm tired of hearing about everyone talking about his "genius". He was almost 51 years old and wrote some nice pop songs in his life. That's it.
Emotionally and intellectually, he was seriously screwed up and at his age he should have had enough wisdom and money to invest in a really good therapist.
I won't miss him, but the tabloids sure will.
  • He "wrote some nice pop songs"? That's like saying Michelangelo painted "some pretty pictures".

I can say you're entitled to your opinion if you disagree about Michael's talent or impact (which says that you're either really young or terribly uninformed), but no one is forcing you to hear about anything. You clicked to come to my website. Turn off the TV, and stop surfing the web. Go outside for Christ's sake. Live your life. And if you don't want to hear the songs when we play Michael Jackson records non-stop for the next little while, don't worry about it because you're probably not invited to the party anyway.
  • PecosBill
Excuse me? "Live my life"? You're the one obsessing about some paedophile popstar, like someone important has passed from your life.
Guess what dude? Tomorrow you'll still be trying to make a living, your friends and family will still be here and MJ will still mean nothing.
(It doesn't sound like such a great party anyway :-)
Oh, and that click to get to your website was sooooooooooo much work, ha ha...
  • yawn.
  • Incredible portrait.

And it's horribly true - he never had a childhood and won't have old age either. It saddens me that he only had the opportunity, really, to live the corned beef portion of his life (sans bread).. But he definitely put every kind of spice into his corned beef!
  • I like your metaphor, especially after I've been to see what you blog about. Very apt!

I had thought about the day that Michael Jackson would die, but I pictured that I would be telling my kids about what it was like seeing Michael Jackson in his prime when I was their age. I never thought it would be this sudden. But at least maybe now dude can get some respect.
  • On the one hand, while I'm not saying it's good he died by any means, at least we can all look forward to hearing the songs he's been recording over the last decade and a half, because he refused to release them until his death. They reported it was something along the lines of 100 songs in March. Sad stuff though, and Farrah Fawcett on the same day.
  • I read that it was about 100 songs that he put away specifically for his kids to release after he died, as they grow up and need money. Better than money sacked away that lawyers can eat up in fees.

I was actually looking news about Farrah when the headlines started rolling about Michael Jackson being rushed to hospital. I was visiting with my Mother at the time, and Michael Jackson is a big part of our family memories. So we followed it in horror and had a terrible cry when it was official.

    Long live the King.
  • oh god that lookin for love line got me weepy
  • That's what I've been saying since the early 90s when people first started cracking jokes about his appearance. Fuckin' hell, how many times did you get down to Beat It? Right? So shut up and be grateful!!
  • this is very awesome!! i love looking at it!! i used to have michael jackson records when i was younger. there is video of me dancing to him when i was only a year old. lol

  • My mother and I got very emotional. I can't watch that career retrospective from the beginning of Moonwalker without getting choked up.
