May 2, 2009 at the Silver Snail. Another fun and successful Free Comic Book Day. Costumes, people, party time.
Like every year, the costumes on the Silver Snail staff were the perfect mix of ridiculous and rad.
Hey George, let me try those guns!

I missed a whole bunch of costumes, seeing them only on Facebook later, out of just not seeing people with all of the crowds and it being so busy.
I drew a Joker and a Spider-Man to get warmed up and get the ball rolling.

Then started taking requests.
When I do these sketches, I don’t want to do the characters just looking like they do in any ol’ comic book pin-up. I want to do something strange or silly.
I might get someone come ask me to do, say, Iron Man in a dress…
Or someone might just say to give them something weird so I draw a robot Spider-Man with wheels for legs…
If you see me do something plain, it means I was too tired or in too big a rush to think about something unique and fun.

I also like to get a picture of the person with the drawing.
These guys wanted Gambit. All I could remember about his costume was the coat so I winged it the rest of the way.
This was Victoria. She is now the 2nd cool Victoria I know in the Beaches.
Victoria asked for Rorschach from Watchmen, so I gave her Rorschach ordering pizza. He must be getting pizza in Montreal if it’s $1.99. Also notice that instead of the cravat he wears in the graphic novel and movie, today he’s wearing a tie that makes him look like he’s from Pepperland.
This kid absolutely did not want Spider-Man done silly. Sorry, bud, that’s my thing.

Star Wars is always a popular request with the kids.

That kid wanted me to draw him kicking Darth Sidious’ ass.
Star Wars was in the air with the 501st reppin’ the scene. That’s Anthony Forrest right there, he played the Stormtrooper in the first movie who Obi-Wan Kenobi does the Jedi mind trick to so that he and Luke can sneak the droids past.
The 501st people were all hung as fuck because they were storming a wedding the previous night. They were only supposed to be at the wedding for the ceremony, shocking attendees with the presence of a bunch of stormtroopers. But they got invited to stay for the party and rocked it until 5 AM.
If that’s how they’re partyin’, sign me up!

And then, out of nowhere, a bunch of kids wanted me to draw The Flash.

I shook it up by giving Isaac a Golden Age Flash.

I was very happy to get a request for “a musician”, giving me an opportunity to bust out my cartoon John Lennon.

This girl was visiting from Europe, and asked for “something with a nice woman”. That was a fun request, so she got this little ditty. European girl said that this was her best day in Canada.
Later in the afternoon, everyone wanted me to draw them.
Oh hey, what up Tish! If anyone should be drawing you, it should be Fawn Gehweiler. You look like the people in her paintings.

What up Zaira!

What up Rebekah! I was done before I noticed that I did not draw a seat on her bicycle.
Look up David and Satro on Facebook, they’re gonna be big time.
At the end of the day, I’m drawing Batman and I see Meghan standing over there.
“Hey Meghan!”, I shout at her. “I might have something for you.”
She comes over and before I show it to her I explain that while she might like that that’s Batman, she might not like the subject matter, depending on what she’s into.
She loves it and the drawing of Batman getting lifted now resides in her rather massive Batman stuff collection.
See ya next year!
